Graffiti is art. Some people may disagree with me, but I'll stand by it. It was when my good friend Melissa came back from Italy when I started to see the artistic vision behind these works. My basic understanding of graffiti before her photos was that graffiti tended to be one-word expressions that I could barely read in their puffy, squished together writing. Yet, after returning from Italy, she showed me so many pictures of the different artistic styles of graffiti she saw all over the country from Venice to Pompeii to Rome. Now, I'm not encouraging graffiti. But these drawings on public streets and buildings were so cool! So different! They intrigued me right away. I never thought I would see anything similar near me. Something that was more than just a tag or a meaningless phrase to the average onlooker. Low and behold, yesterday while I was walking on the train platform, I saw it. There was a poem graffitied on the staircase leading to the underground. Below it were tons of other written comments about how amazing the message was being understood. Since the photo I took makes the writing too small to be legible, I thought I would transcribe it and share it with you all.
There will come a time you’ll see with no more tears
And love will not break your heart, but will dismiss your fears
Get over your hill and see, what you find there
With grace in your heart, and flowers in your hair.
As soon as I had finished reading it, I was smiling. Sometimes there's something that can make any day positive and this was one of them. So, to whoever out there wrote that: thanks for improving my day and for all the others who were encouraged to smile : )xo Novellette
